A high fiber diet can also reduce the risk of heart disease through the reduction of blood cholestoreol levels.</p>
<p>Less well founded claims include the claim that dietary fiber may reduce the risk of some cancers , especially colon cancer. Such claims are made on the supposition that dietary fiber improves the efficiency of the digestive system if eaten regularily, and therefore a person with a fiber rich diet is less likely to be exposed to toxins within the remainder of their diet for as long a period of time as an individual with less fiber in their diet.</p>
<p>A further health benefit of a fiber rich diet is that foods high in fiber can help to maintain a healthy body weight. High fiber foods are often low in calorie whilst providing enough bulk to leave a diner feeling “full”. Fiber rich foods often require more chewing before swallowing preventing a person from eating a large calorific intake in a short time.</p>
<p>The question is how can you put more fiber in your diet without making your diet taste too bland?</p>
<p>Once you are able to identify high fiber foods you will be surprised at how you can improve your health with small changes without sacrificing to much taste from your diet and in many cases by improving the taste of your diet.</p>
<p>The only sources of dietary fiber available are from fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains so it is quite easy to identify high fiber foods. <p>It may be wise to consider that any additional fiber in your diet over and above what you currently eat will be beneficial for you but when you consider that a daily intake of about 25-35 grams is generally recommended you may be surprised to know that all it takes is a bowl of 100% bran flakes with a banana for breakfast and a can of baked beans for lunch to bring you all the benefits of a high fiber diet.</p>

<p>Generally speaking fiber is a polysaccharide. A non starch glucose unit that the body enzymes cannot break down. Some fiber is soluble in water and some are not. Celllulose and pectin are the names of some fiber you may be familiar with.</p>
<p>Fiber is an important part of our diet as it is essential for good health. If you choose to use a fad diet to quickly loose weight, check to be sure your fad diet contains sufficient fiber. Adults require 20 to 35 grams of fiber a day. Sufficient daily fiber promotes good colon health and guards against hemorrhoids and other intestinal problems.</p>
<p>A high fiber diet promotes the feeling of being full- helping to cut the calorie intake. High fiber stimulates the muscles of the intestines and colon and promotes regularity. Studies also suggest that a high fiber diet reduces the risk of colon cancer.</p>
<p>Take some time to become aware of sources of high fiber foods. High fiber food are readily available and we need to be aware of them and choose the foods we need. Fruits and grains are high in fiber. Eating any of the following food will yield 2 grams or more of fiber.</p>
<p>Small apple</p>
<p>banana</p>
<p>2 prunes</p>
<p>several cherries</p>
<p>potatoes</p>
<p>dried peas</p>
<p>peaches</p>
<p>slice of whole wheat bread</p>
<p>popcorn</p>
<p>oatmeal - also great to reduce cholesterol</p>
<p>Broccoli</p>
<p>baked beans</p>
<p>green beans</p>
<p>This list is by no mean conclusive. The canned and packaged foods we buy a the grocery store all have a label usually on the back called Nutritional Facts. This label will list the amount of sodium, calories, etc, as well as the amount of dietary fiber in each serving. It is hard to go wrong with any of the green vegetables either whole, canned, or frozen. An added extra when you select green vegetables is that they have few calories. Although there are several foods high in fiber you may also want to look at the calories involved if gaining weight is a consideration.</p>
<p>Do you like to snack? Be selective in you snaking. Chose snake foods containing fiber. Granted snack foods are not the best source of fiber. Peanuts ( probably my favorite), walnuts and even pickles are snake food containing fiber.</p>

<p>A diet rich in fiber has been shown to lower cholesterol and blood sugar in diabetics. Many diabetics can significantly lower their blood sugar, and as a result, reduce their diabetic and cholesterol medications or stop taking them altogether, by eating lots of high fiber foods.</p>
<p>A recent study published in the May issue of The New England Journal of Medicine found that blood sugar levels were reduced by 8.9% on a high fiber diet. It also lowered cholesterol and triglycerides.</p>
<p>Fiber comes from the cell walls of plants. Additionally, fiber and water work together to keep the bowels regular.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the majority of high fiber foods also contain a high amount of carbohydrates, and if you are diabetic, those will increase your blood sugar levels dramatically.</p>
<p>Below are lists of low-carb foods that are also high in fiber, along with the approximate number of grams of fiber they contain.</p>
<p>The fiber content shown is for a quantity of 1/2 cup.</p>

<p>Most of us simply do not have the time to shop for everything we need every day. We prefer to buy foods that are easily and quickly prepared and that we can store for a long time. It is still important however, that we should get our recommended fiber intake.</p>
